Capping on Landfill Liners

Protecting landfill cover systems and supporting long-term environmental containment.

Geotextiles in Landfills

Landfill capping systems are used to close and protect landfill cells after waste placement is complete. Their role is to reduce rainwater infiltration, support controlled drainage and help maintain the long-term integrity of the environmental containment system.

Our needle-punched nonwoven geotextiles are used as protection and functional layers in landfill capping systems. Installed above, below or around geomembranes, drainage layers or other barrier systems, the geotextile helps protect sensitive liners from puncture, abrasion and mechanical stress.

In landfill capping applications, the cover system can be exposed to settlement movements, cover soil loads, drainage aggregate, installation activity and changing weather conditions. Without a suitable protection layer, these stresses can damage the liner or reduce the performance of the layers designed to control water and gas movement.

By acting as a cushioning, separation and filtration layer, our geotextiles help preserve the integrity of the landfill cap. They support durable environmental protection by helping keep materials separated, protecting critical barriers and contributing to stable layer performance over time.

Key Benefits

  • Protects geomembranes and landfill cap liners from puncture and abrasion
  • Acts as a cushioning layer beneath cover soil, drainage aggregate or protection layers
  • Helps reduce localised stress on sensitive barrier systems
  • Separates soil, drainage and liner layers where required
  • Supports filtration by retaining fine particles while allowing controlled liquid flow
  • Helps maintain the integrity of landfill capping systems after closure

Example of a Layer Structure

In landfill capping systems, nonwoven geotextiles can be positioned above or below the liner, depending on the design of the cover system and the protection requirements of the project.

  • Vegetation or erosion control layer
The top layer that helps protect the landfill cap from surface erosion and supports integration into the surrounding environment.
  • Cover soil layer
A soil layer that provides weight, surface stability and protection for the layers below.
  • Drainage layer
A mineral or geosynthetic drainage layer designed to collect and guide infiltrating water away from the barrier system.
  • Upper nonwoven geotextile protection layer
Installed above the liner or barrier system to protect it from drainage aggregate, cover soil loads and installation-related damage.
  • Geomembrane or barrier layer
The low-permeability layer designed to limit rainwater infiltration into the landfill body.
  • Lower geotextile or gas venting layer
Where required, this layer can support protection, separation or gas movement beneath the barrier system.
  • Waste body or prepared foundation layer
The closed landfill cell or prepared surface that supports the capping system.
