Geotextiles in Tunnel Membrane Systems

Tunnel waterproofing systems must protect underground infrastructure from water ingress while performing under pressure from the surrounding ground. In many tunnel designs, the waterproofing membrane also needs to be protected from rough surfaces, installation stress and water pressure behind the lining.

Our needle-punched nonwoven geotextiles are used as functional layers in tunnel membrane systems. Installed between the excavated tunnel surface or shotcrete layer and the waterproofing membrane, the geotextile helps protect the membrane from puncture, abrasion and localised mechanical stress.

At the same time, the geotextile can support drainage by providing a permeable path for water behind the membrane. This helps guide water toward the designed drainage system and can reduce the risk of hydrostatic pressure build-up around the tunnel structure.

By combining protection and drainage in one layer, our geotextiles help preserve the integrity of waterproofing membranes and support long-term performance in road tunnels, railway tunnels, subway systems and other underground infrastructure.

Example of a Layer Structure

In tunnel membrane systems, nonwoven geotextiles are commonly installed directly behind the waterproofing membrane. Their role is to protect the membrane and, where required, support controlled drainage along the tunnel surface.

  • Excavated tunnel surface or shotcrete layer
    The prepared outer tunnel surface that forms the initial support of the underground structure.
  • Nonwoven geotextile protection and drainage layer
    Installed against the tunnel surface to cushion the waterproofing membrane, protect it from mechanical damage and help guide water toward the drainage system.
  • Waterproofing membrane
    The barrier layer designed to prevent water from entering the tunnel interior or structural lining.
  • Drainage pipe or collection system
    Where required, a drainage element that collects and directs water away from the tunnel structure.
  • Inner concrete lining
    The structural lining that forms the finished tunnel interior and protects the waterproofing system.
