Water Reservoir Liner Protection

Protecting landfill liner systems and supporting long-term environmental containment.

Geotextiles in Landfill Liner Systems

Landfill liner systems are designed to prevent leachate and contaminated liquids from migrating into the surrounding soil and groundwater. In these demanding environmental applications, every layer must contribute to reliable containment, long-term durability and protection of the barrier system.

Our needle-punched nonwoven geotextiles are used as protection layers in landfill liner systems. Installed above, below or around geomembranes and other barrier layers, the geotextile helps protect sensitive membranes from puncture, abrasion and localised mechanical stress.

During installation and long-term operation, landfill liners can be exposed to sharp objects, uneven subgrades, drainage aggregates, waste loads and settlement movements. Without a suitable protection layer, these stresses can damage the membrane and compromise the performance of the containment system.

By acting as a cushioning and protective layer, our geotextiles help preserve the integrity of the liner system. They can also support separation, filtration and drainage functions within the landfill structure, helping maintain stable and effective environmental protection over time.

Key Benefits

  • Protects geomembranes and landfill liners from puncture and abrasion
  • Acts as a cushioning layer against sharp aggregate, rough subgrades and waste loads
  • Helps reduce localised stress on sensitive barrier systems
  • Supports long-term containment performance in landfill applications
  • Separates soil, drainage aggregate and membrane layers where required
  • Supports filtration by retaining fine particles while allowing controlled liquid flow
  • Contributes to effective drainage and reduced pressure build-up above the liner

Example of a Layer Structure

In landfill liner systems, nonwoven geotextiles are commonly installed directly next to the geomembrane or barrier layer. Their position depends on the landfill design, subgrade conditions and the level of protection required.

  • Waste or cover layer
The upper landfill material or protective cover placed above the containment system.
  • Drainage or leachate collection layer
A granular or geosynthetic drainage layer designed to collect and guide liquids away from the liner system.
  • Upper nonwoven geotextile protection layer
Installed above the geomembrane to protect it from drainage aggregates, waste loads and installation-related damage.
  • Geomembrane or barrier layer
The primary containment membrane designed to prevent unwanted liquid migration into the surrounding environment.
  • Lower nonwoven geotextile protection layer
Installed beneath the geomembrane to protect it from puncture, abrasion and stress caused by the prepared subgrade.
  • Prepared subgrade or foundation soil
The compacted and shaped base that supports the landfill liner system.
